Do you have the fever? We do! I seriously love the Olympics. We let the girls stay up extra late last night so they could watch some of the opening ceremonies and it was so much fun to watch it with them. Aside from the fact that the show itself was just amazing, it was really neat to share with my own kids something that I enjoyed so much as a little girl.
Did you see it? Wasn't it great? Some of my favorite bits were the sneaky candid shots NBC kept showing of President Bush yawning, looking at his watch, or looking otherwise bored to tears. It's the Olympics, man! At least Laura looked like she was having a nice time. (I think my new criteria for this November's election will be who would be more enthusiastic waving a tiny flag at the next opening ceremonies? Hmmm...I'm leaning Obama here....)
I grew up in a family that was devoted to watching the Olympics and I well remember my own first games, glued to the set in my grandparents house watching Mary Lou Retton win the gold in 1984 in Los Angeles. And then trying to imitate Mary Lou with less success in their backyard. I'm sure there were many injuries sustained that summer by pint-sized gymnastic hopefuls. (I had one good friend break her arm trying to imitate the amazing Ms. Retton!)
The Olympics just fill me with good warm fuzzies. I love all the stories of hard work and sacrifice, the amazing feats of endurance, runners stumbling across the finish line dead last because "their country sent them here to finish the race, not to quit," and so on. Enjoy your two weeks of global harmony and brotherhood! Happy watching!

Were you in Seoul in 1988--I'll bet you were! I'll bet you have vivid memories of that.
I've been showing my kids videos of Kerri Strug in the 1996 Olympics. There's courage, kids!
I love the Olympics too - I'll watch any event. I love it all!
I am with you on Olympic fever. We lived in LA in '84 and I remember watching the torch rely as a 5 year old girl. I wanted to be like Mary Lou Retton so bad. We ate Wheaties everyday because she was on the box!
Yay the Olympics are awesome!! I'm so excited that we won the relay last night - so great!!! Mary Lou was my first Olympic memory too! I started taking gymnastic lessons after those '84 Olympics and was sad to realize I couldn't do a vault like her right off the bat (my gymnastics career ended quickly after that!))
