tidbits

A few things we have been up to this week:
  • Our front yard looks like this

We are gradually getting closer to having a fabulous new front yard! I'm excited to have a smaller, terraced version of our previous huge wall. And I'm excited to put in some new shrubs and plants on said terrace. Jared has been sweating and toiling for the past week (and all summer over landscaping books,) hefting those huge blocks and digging away. He's been getting up early and staying out late - he can't get enough of backbreaking manual labor! Thanks, hon - you're the best!

Not only has he had to heft those massive blocks, but he also discovered that when the previous owners built this eyesore of a retaining wall, they chucked in the concrete posts from the old front porch, as well. That pile of gray stuff in our yard is all the concrete he's excavated so far. Yikes!

He has also excavated many bulbs that I can't wait to replant.

He has also excavated...

  • This guy!

This, in case you didn't notice the bright red hourglass on the spider's tummy, is a charming black widow! Jared has found many of his friends and relations while taking down the wall and has kindly introduced all of them to the bottom of his shoe. Fun for Jared! Just another reason why I owe him big time when this is all finished.

  • We have a crappy napper.
Oh, he may look all cute and sleepy right now, but don't be deceived for a minute! That's just what he wants you to think! His genius master plan is to wake up 20 minutes after being set down, cry pitifully until I pick him up and rock him, fall asleep in my arms 15 minutes later, trick me into setting him back into his crib... repeat 30 times and you will have a very good idea of what I've been up to for the past few afternoons. What gives, Sammy? Do you need a binky? What say you, readers of the blog? How do you get your teeny babies to take naps?

  • I "get" to teach the dating and chastity lesson to my Laurels on Sunday. Hooray! You seasoned youth leaders and anyone who remembers getting this lesson as a youth, any pointers? I need some help here.

  • Jared and I began watching Lost this week. All I can say is Scariest. Polar bear. Ever. Riveting and compelling, but maybe a little too freaky for someone who has to get up in the middle of the night and sit alone in a dark room (okay, I'm not alone, but Sam really is no help here.) You watchers of Lost, does it get creepier? And, even if it does, should I still persist? I'm just more of a Jim and Pam girl, I guess. But I really want to know what's up with the Koreans...

Vincent doesn't scare me so much. I'm a little more worried about the bald guy.

  • And a picture of Nora on a horse. She insisted.

First of all, WOW! I'm so impressed by all of Jared's hard work. You guys sure are on the ball--we've been in our house longer and still haven't even really started landscaping...

As for the napping, I empathize with you, Gwyn. Ella was the same way. Unfortunately for her (er, I mean me) she never really grew out of it. I heard of all sorts of theories and solutions to the problem, ranging from the pick up/put down method touted by the Baby Whisperer, to the cry it out Babywise technique. I could never stomach that one for such a young baby, but who knows what would have happened if I had tried? Maybe Ella would have actually napped past 15 months. Good luck! Maybe it will help if I say that Jeremy went through a short phase like that when he was a young baby, but thankfully grew out of it and is now a stellar napper. So don't give up hope.

We love Lost! Keep going. I can't wait for the new season to start in January.

Good luck with the napping. I had the same problem with my little guy. I ended up "wearing" him in the Baby Bjorn much of the time just so I could get things done.

Lost is the BEST! well, maybe a close 2nd to the office. Season 2 was a bit slow for me, but this last season was terrific. So keep going, and you're smart to only watch it on DVD, that's the only way to go.

Your yard is looking fabulous. WHY did you have to put that spider picture in there, makes me not want to wander onto your blog again!

Napping. . . no pointers there except to hold out and not pick him up, but I know that is much easier said than done. I do think babies go through a weird phase around 2-4 mo where they're just crabby. So keep trying :)

Oh, and the chastity lesson, I vividly recall a lesson where they took a chocolate cake and smashed it our chewed it up and spit it out or something, and said that's what we would be like if we ever wandered from the path, and who would want a smashed up cake compared to a new one. DON'T do that :) I'm sure you'll do a great job!!

Good Job Jared! You sure have put him to work.
As far as napping goes, I am in the let him cry it out club. We ruined Max by not letting him cry it out and he stopped napping all together at 15 months. It was a fight everytime. With Kate we were less patient and let her cry it out more. She turned out to be an awesome sleeper!

Way to go Jared on the yard!! And for killing all those crazy spiders! That picture of Nora is so cute...I think she is looking more and more like Eve.

Hey, how are you guys. Livin' in oregon now. We aren't to far away in Washington and we are loving it. It is our debut into the world of the working man. No more cinderblock walls for us. Wahoo.
